Good to know

Practical answers before you ask

Getting here from Poipet

The land border at Poipet is 48 km west of Serei Saophoan. Shared taxis and buses cover the route in about 45 minutes to an hour. Immigration formalities are your responsibility, but we can advise on realistic timings around Thai public holidays.

Getting here from Siem Reap

Roughly two hours by road on National Road 6 to Serei Saophoan, then another hour north for Banteay Chhmar. Many travellers hire a car with a driver for the day, or take a bus and pick up a moto locally.

Accommodation options

Banteay Chhmar offers homestays only — comfortable, family-run and limited in number. Serei Saophoan has guesthouses and mid-range hotels with more facilities, and works well as a base for the southern sites.

Money in rural areas

Cash only. Bring small-denomination US dollar notes and riel. There are ATMs in Serei Saophoan and Poipet, but nothing in the temple or wetland villages.

Accessibility

Temple ruins have uneven stone and narrow passages; the wetland reserve is viewed from vehicles and hides. Tell us about mobility needs and we will be honest about which sites are practical.

Travelling with children

Homestays, the cooking class, the ox-cart ride and village cycling all work well for families. The dawn crane watch starts at 05:00 and is best for patient older children.
